MCLEAN WOODS ANTIQUE REPRODUCTION DOORS

Wood Species

Unless otherwise noted, all doors photographed are shown in figured grain mahogany. Other species are available such as Character Cherry, Walnut and Quarter Sawn White Oak. McLean Woods does not offer doors in substandard or unstable species. Besides unacceptable stability, such species don’t offer the same antique finishing possibilities...

Prehanging

All doors, entry and interior doors are shipped prehung in jambs with Hager hinges installed. Some pairs may have to be shipped with jambs disassembled, but the prehanging operation would have taken place prior to shipment. Each door is labeled with a door ID number for easy distribution on the job site. Many hinge upgrades are available.

Hardware

Some photographs feature doors with genuine hand forged or solid bronze hardware by Hardware Renaissance. These unique styles harmonize with the historic character of the doors style and can be obtained from any Hardware Renaissance dealer. To locate a dealer visit www.hardwarerenaissance.com

Entry Doors

Entry doors are priced with the following specifications. They are: 2 1/4" thick (minimum) with automatic door bottoms (sweeps), exterior rated finishes, weatherproofed jambs, and custom thresholds in white oak. If the door contains glass, it is always tempered and insulated and sometimes includes a pane of "art" glass, like seedy, machined antique or hand leaded. Should a client only want plain tempered glass, this is not provided by McLean Woods as shipping costs make it inefficient compared to obtaining it from a local glazer.

Interior Doors

All interior doors are a minimum of 1 3/4" thick but can be built thicker if required. 1 3/8" thick doors are not available. As with the entries, all stiles and rails are a premium widths and all framing members are stave core as detailed in Construction Specifications.

Construction Specifications

All McLean Woods doors are of the highest architectural quality and meet or exceed the Architectural Woodworking Institutes Premium Standards. This includes stave core construction, also known as engineered stiles and rails. This procedure requires a core material of highly stable material such as Microlam, a structural framing material, to be built into the stiles and rails (framing members) of the door to further increase the stability. All panels are solid wood in the selected species.

Stiles (vertical framing members) are 5 1/2" wide or 1/4" wider than standard production doors. This allows standard hardware to position with a 2 1/4" set back in tubular latch or mortise lock application. The increased width adds stability and is more historically correct. Bottom horizontal rails are normally 9", but McLean Woods standard is 12".

Finishing

McLean Woods does NOT sell unfinished doors. All finishes are done by artists skilled in high quality furniture and door finishing including restoration and antiquing. Finishes are 6 to 8 steps and for multi layered paint finishes can be as many as 12 steps. Techniques include chemical fuming, custom glazes, hand waxes and other procedures that cannot be produced in a construction environment by a painting subcontractor. For rustic styles requiring texturing to mimic historic milling techniques, all work is hand done using traditional tools such as end shaves, block planes and chisels.

PRICING GUIDELINES

Entry Doors

A single entry door with a square top will start at approximately $8,000 complete except hardware. Adding raised moldings or panel designs with more than four panels will increase the cost. A half round or arched top can add another $1200 to $1500. Carving, transoms, sidelites or height in excess of 8 feet will increase the cost even further. A double door with such craftsman upgrades such as arched top, custom glass, hand forged grille work, hand carving, transom and sidelites will be more.

Interior Doors

Interior door prices begin at approximately $2500 except for hardware and increase with arch tops, moldings, carving, glass and other embellishments. Unit prices decrease for quantities greater than 12 units. For arched top doors, it is best to use the fewest number of width changes as a custom arch template must be made for each width.

Warranty

McLean Woods Company offers the best warranty in the industry which is three years and is based on Architectural Woodworking Institutes Premium Standards against warping. McLean Woods cannot warrant finishes that fail due to abuse or neglect. Finishes will change over time due to the doors’ exposure to sun and other environmental elements such as temperature and moisture. All exterior finishes use Pennofin Oil which is the best protective finish available in the market today. Exterior doors require reapplication of the material on a periodic basis. Unprotected exterior doors with a western or southern exposure may require a reapplication semi-annually, depending on the severity of the climate conditions and exposure to the sun. It is incumbent upon the Owner to provide all necessary preventive maintenance in order to keep the warranty against warping in effect.
